South African wines are among the best in the world. South Africa has the perfect climate for growing top quality grapes, and the sheer amount of wine farms and wine routes throughout the country is a surefire sign that there are plenty of top quality wines to choose from. In this blog post, our Social Media Manager, Kayla, will be detailing her favourites from the Western Cape.
Up first, we have the Babylonstoren Viognier 2019, a fabulously light wine, perfect for summer sundowners sat in a lounge chair. A young harvest, this Viognier is playfully floral on the nose with stonefruit on the palate, creating a lovely full-bodied wine with the aroma to match. From the Pearl of South Africa, you certainly can’t go wrong with this one on a hot day.
De Grendel Koetshuis is the star of their harvest each year - being their most popular wine, it is crisp and light with an aroma of lime, white pear, passion fruit and lemon thyme. De Grendel is situated in the Durbanville Hills, a must-see when touring the Western Cape, nothing can match the stunning stretch of rolling hills, refreshingly green grass, and vines as far as the eye can see.
Both these whites are recommended to be served chilled with citrusy fish, shelled prawns and light salads. Picture hectares of grapes, overlooking the crisp Atlantic Ocean and the African sun bearing down - that’s where you’ll want to be when enjoying these wines.
Up next is the fantastic Waterkloof Cape Coral, for those of you that enjoy rose all day! Delicate and fabulously perfumed, it will take your palette away from the ordinary rose to the delectable art form that is South African rose. Hailing from the old town of Stellenbosch, this wine goes hand in hand with viewing local art and enjoying a braai with family and friends.
And my final favourite, the Krone Borealis Cap Classique - if you’re a huge fan of bubbles like me, Krone gives French Champagnes a run for their money. A traditional cap classique from the Tulbagh region will have you tasting the stars like no other! Dry and elegant, it will elevate any celebration.
